Baseball & Softball Scoreboard FAQs
How much does a baseball or softball scoreboard cost?
A baseball or softball scoreboard typically costs $4,500 to $26,000. Most programs choose a basic or inning-by-inning scoreboard sized for the outfield fence, and options such as pitch count, a pitch timer, and a sponsor panel add to the total. Outdoor LED video boards start around $50,000, and scoring accessories start at $1,300. See realistic ranges by sport and feature tier in our scoreboard cost guide.
What types of baseball and softball scoreboards are available?
Baseball and softball scoreboards come in four main types: basic scoreboards with the score, inning, and ball, strike, and out lights; inning-by-inning scoreboards, from 18 to 36 feet wide, that show runs for every inning; pitch count scoreboards that track pitches for both teams; and LED video displays. Schedule a facility evaluation to find the right type for your field.
What is the best scoreboard for a high school baseball field?
For most high school varsity fields, the right choice is an inning-by-inning scoreboard with pitch count, such as the 24-foot Model 1606-PC, which shows the line score, the count, and pitches thrown for both teams. JV, practice, and softball fields often use a smaller board such as the Model 1654, which adds a game clock for fields shared with soccer. How do you read a baseball scoreboard?
On an inning-by-inning scoreboard, the numbered columns show the runs each team scored in each inning, with the guest team on the top row because it bats first. RUNS and HITS show each team’s totals. BALL, STRIKE, and OUT show the count on the current batter and the outs in the half-inning, AT BAT shows the batter’s uniform number, and the H or E indicator shows whether the official scorer ruled the last play a hit or an error. Pitch count scoreboards add PITCHES for each team. See these features on the Model 1606-PC scoreboard.
Can one scoreboard be used for baseball and softball?
Yes. Nevco baseball scoreboards are designed for combination baseball and softball facilities, and inning-by-inning models show at least nine innings, which covers both sports. Fields shared with soccer can use a board with a game clock, such as the Model 1654, and Intelligent Caption™ scoreboards add football, lacrosse, and field hockey. See the full lineup of multi-sport scoreboards.
Do I need a pitch count scoreboard?
If you play high school baseball, a pitch count display is worth considering. NFHS rules require every state association to set pitching limits based on the number of pitches thrown, and a visible count helps coaches, umpires, and fans track it. Nevco pitch count scoreboards show pitches for both teams. To add a pitch count to an existing field, choose the standalone PCD-01 or one of six pitch count displays designed to sit below Nevco baseball scoreboards from 8 to 24 feet wide. See the pitch count display.
Can a baseball scoreboard show a pitch clock?
Yes. Nevco baseball and softball scoreboards can integrate with a separate pitch timer display, such as the Model 9630 or 9635, for leagues that use a pitch clock. The timer can be run from hand-held switches or from an MPCX2 handheld controller. See the pitch timer display.
Does Nevco make portable baseball scoreboards?
Nevco does not currently offer a battery-operated portable baseball scoreboard. For fields without a permanent structure, the Field Mobile Portable Cart is a rolling aluminum stand that carries the Model 1610 or 1650 baseball and softball scoreboard, so one board can move between fields. It rolls on four 10-inch flat-free casters, two of them lockable, and a cart-mounted scoreboard can plug into a nearby outlet or run on a Portable Cart Battery Kit, sold separately. See the Field Mobile Portable Cart.
How is a baseball scoreboard installed?
A baseball scoreboard is usually mounted on poles or a structure beyond the outfield fence, with a power connection and, for larger boards, a concrete foundation. Nevco outdoor scoreboards use flush sign mounting and gasketed digits, and models such as the 1606-PC and 1654 are designed to withstand wind loads over 180 mph. Nevco assesses the site during a free facility evaluation. Talk to a Nevco consultant to start planning your installation.
How do you operate a baseball scoreboard?
A baseball scoreboard is run from a controller in the press box or dugout, where the operator enters runs, the count, outs, and hits as the game goes. Nevco baseball scoreboards run on the MPCW-7 console controller or the MPCX2 wireless handheld controller. On pitch count scoreboards run from MPCX2 handhelds, a second MPCX2 pitch count controller tracks the pitches. Explore our scoreboard controls.
Can a baseball scoreboard show video and replays?
Yes. A Nevco outdoor LED video display shows live video, instant replays, and sponsor graphics alongside the line score and count. Video content and scoring are controlled from one platform, Nevco ONE Video Pro, with no subscription fee. Explore our LED video displays.
How do schools fund a baseball scoreboard?
Many schools offset part or all of the cost through local sponsorships. Sponsor panels, LED message centers, and video displays give local businesses ad space seen at every home game. Through Nevco Media Group, schools and community facilities can offset up to 100% of the cost, with Nevco Media Group selling and managing the sponsorships on the facility’s behalf.
